WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) released the following statement after the CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), a major American trade group, endorsed Chairman Gallagher’s BIOSECURE Act and announced that WuXi AppTec would exit the membership organization. This news comes just days after Chairman Gallagher expressed concern to the Department of Justice that BIO was advocating against the bipartisan national security legislation, on behalf of WuXi AppTec. Wuxi AppTec is a Chinese company with close ties to the People’s Liberation Army and Chinese Communist Party. “This week, BIO’s newly minted CEO, John Crowley, sent me correspondence that outlined BIO’s endorsement of the BIOSECURE Act, its rescindment of prior letters advocating against the legislation, and WuXi AppTec’s ultimate removal from the organization. I applaud Mr. Crowley and BIO’s commitment to the BIOSECURE Act and its recognition of the threat that CCP-backed companies like WuXi AppTec pose to America’s biotechnology industry.”
